COBRA is the default road after leaving a job: keep the same plan, pay the full price. Convenient, yes. Cheap, almost never. Because you take over the entire premium your employer used to share, family COBRA bills often land north of what a mortgage payment used to be. Before you elect it, put these five alternatives on the table.
1. A private underwritten PPO plan
For healthy individuals and families, private medically underwritten plans are often the biggest saver versus COBRA, sometimes cutting the monthly cost substantially while keeping a broad PPO network. You can apply any time of year, and approval can be quick. The honest limitation: health questions are part of the deal, and applicants with significant conditions can be declined. If that is you, skip ahead to the marketplace.
2. An ACA marketplace plan
Losing employer coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment window on the marketplace. These plans accept everyone and cover pre-existing conditions, and if your income qualifies you for a subsidy, the price can undercut COBRA handily. With the enhanced subsidies gone after 2025, run your real numbers; a severance package or a working spouse can push household income past the 400 percent of poverty cliff where subsidies stop.
3. A spouse's employer plan
Often the simplest answer in a two-income home. Your loss of coverage is a qualifying event for your spouse's plan too, letting you join mid-year. Employer contributions usually make this the least expensive option on the list when it is available.
4. Medicaid, if income has dropped
A job loss can change your household income enough to qualify for Medicaid, which is low-cost or free and enrolls year-round. Kids may qualify for CHIP even when parents do not. There is no shame in using the program built for exactly this moment.
5. Short-term coverage, for true gaps
If you have a new job starting in a month or two, a short-term plan can bridge the gap for less than COBRA. Understand what you are buying: these plans are not comprehensive, typically exclude pre-existing conditions, and are limited or unavailable in some states. They are a bridge, not a home.
When does COBRA still win? Fairness requires saying it: if you are mid-treatment, expecting a baby, or deep into your deductible, keeping your exact plan can be worth every penny. COBRA also asks no health questions.
However you lean, do not let the 60-day windows expire while you deliberate. Once the COBRA election and marketplace special enrollment windows close, your remaining options narrow considerably, and private coverage still depends on passing underwriting. Give yourself a decision deadline a couple of weeks ahead of the real one, and use the time to compare with a clear head.
The right answer depends on your health, income, and timeline, and a fifteen-minute conversation can sort it. A licensed Liberty Health advisor will compare all of these against your COBRA notice for free, no obligation attached. Call (251) 205-6801.
