PPO vs. HMO: What the Letters Actually Mean for Your Family

The cheapest plans on the marketplace shelf are usually HMOs. The price looks friendly until you need a specialist two counties over.

An HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) keeps costs down by keeping you inside a tight local network. You pick a primary care doctor, you get referrals to see specialists, and outside the network — outside your region, even — you're generally covered for emergencies only.

A PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) trades a somewhat higher premium for freedom: see specialists without referrals, get care in and out of network, and carry your coverage across state lines. For families who travel, work between states, split time between towns, or simply want to keep their longtime doctor, that freedom is usually the whole point.

The honest verdict

If every doctor you'll ever need practices within twenty minutes of your kitchen table, an HMO's discount can be worth the leash. Most families we serve decided it wasn't — usually right after a referral runaround or an out-of-area bill.

An advisor can show you what a private PPO actually costs against the HMO you're eyeing. The gap is often smaller than you'd guess.
