Private PPO Plans vs. Health Sharing Ministries

Health sharing runs deep in many communities, and we respect why. But a promise to share is not a contract to pay — and that difference matters most on your worst day.

Health care sharing ministries are membership communities — often faith-based — where members contribute monthly and requests for help are shared among the group. The monthly cost is genuinely low, and for many families the community aspect is meaningful. We're not here to disparage that.

But it's important to be clear-eyed: health sharing is not insurance. There is no legal obligation to pay your bills, no state insurance department backing you, pre-existing conditions are commonly excluded or waiting-period restricted, and payment can depend on the ministry's guidelines and available funds. A private PPO plan is a regulated insurance contract — the carrier is legally bound to pay covered claims.

The honest verdict

If a sharing ministry reflects your convictions and you understand exactly what is and isn't promised, that's your call to make, and we'll respect it. Our job is making sure you know the difference before a six-figure hospital bill teaches it.

Many families find a private PPO lands close enough to sharing-level monthly costs to make the guarantee worth it. An advisor can show you that math in one call.
