Between jobs is a strange season: less income, more uncertainty, and, if you are not careful, no health insurance right when stress is highest. The temptation to just go without for a few weeks is real and understandable. It is also the one gamble we ask every client not to take, because a single uninsured emergency can cost more than a year of premiums.
First, know your exact end date
Employer coverage usually ends either on your last day or on the last day of that month, and the difference matters. Ask HR which it is before you leave. That date is when your bridge must start, and it also starts the clock on your special enrollment rights and your COBRA election window.
The four bridges
COBRA keeps your exact plan for up to 18 months at full price plus a small fee; it is the expensive, seamless option, and the right one if you are mid-treatment or deep into your deductible. The marketplace opens a 60-day special enrollment window when you lose job coverage; if your reduced income qualifies you for subsidies, this can be very affordable. Private underwritten plans can be applied for immediately and often cost healthy applicants less than COBRA, with broad PPO networks; the trade-off is that underwriting can decline applicants. Short-term plans are the budget bridge for a healthy person with a new job starting soon, but they exclude pre-existing conditions and are thin by design.
A trick worth knowing about COBRA
Your COBRA election window runs 60 days, and electing is retroactive to the day employer coverage ended. Practically, that means some healthy people line up cheaper coverage while keeping COBRA as a safety net during the window: if something big happened in those first weeks, they could still elect backward. Understand the rules and dates before leaning on this, but it is legitimate breathing room.
Match the bridge to the gap
A two-week gap with a signed offer letter calls for a different answer than an open-ended job search. Short gaps favor simple, temporary solutions. Long or uncertain gaps favor real, comprehensive coverage you would be content to keep.
Money is tight between paychecks, and it is fair to say so. But remember the comparison is not premium versus zero; it is premium versus the risk of an uncapped hospital bill landing during the one season you can least absorb it. Even a modest plan with a high deductible puts a ceiling on the damage, and a ceiling is exactly what this season calls for.
