Losing Employer Health Coverage? Here Are All Your Options

Whether it came from a layoff, a resignation, or hours dropping below the benefits threshold, losing employer health coverage sets several clocks ticking at once. The good news is that this exact event unlocks more options than almost any other moment in insurance. Here is the full menu, with deadlines.

Your deadlines at a glance

Losing employer coverage is a qualifying life event. It opens a 60-day special enrollment period on the ACA marketplace and a 60-day window to elect COBRA if your employer is subject to it. Private underwritten plans have no deadline at all, since they accept applications year-round. Mark the date your coverage actually ends, because every window counts from around that date, and letting both 60-day windows lapse leaves you with fewer choices.

Option one: COBRA continuation

COBRA keeps the exact plan you had, doctors, network, and deductible progress included, for up to 18 months. You pay the full premium plus up to 2 percent, which is a shock when you have only ever seen the payroll-deducted share. COBRA earns its cost when you are mid-treatment, expecting, or late in a deductible year. It asks no health questions.

Option two: the marketplace

Marketplace plans accept everyone and cover pre-existing conditions. If losing your job dropped your household income, you may qualify for subsidies that make this the cheapest comprehensive option available, and a genuinely low income may qualify you for Medicaid instead, which enrolls year-round. Do note that the enhanced subsidies expired at the end of 2025, so households with solid income, from a working spouse or severance, may face full 2026 prices, which rose sharply.

Option three: private underwritten coverage

If you are healthy, private PPO plans are often the value play, frequently costing less than COBRA while offering broad national networks. Applications are open any day, and approval can be quick. The honest trade-off never changes: underwriting means applicants can be declined, so this road suits the healthy and not those with significant conditions.

Option four: a family member's plan

Your coverage loss is also a qualifying event for your spouse's employer plan, letting you and the kids join mid-year. When available, this is often the simplest and most affordable answer on the page.

How do you choose? Mid-treatment favors COBRA. Lower income favors the marketplace or Medicaid. Healthy and paying full price favors private. Married with benefits available favors the spouse plan.

And keep every notice your employer and carrier send during this stretch. Proof of prior coverage, your termination date, and your COBRA paperwork all have a way of being requested later, and having them together in one folder makes every application faster and calmer.
