When Is Open Enrollment for Health Insurance? Dates and Deadlines

Every fall, the window opens: the one stretch of the year when anyone can sign up for an ACA marketplace plan, no questions asked and no life event required. Miss it, and your marketplace options narrow until next year. Here is when it happens, how the deadlines work, and what to do if the calendar is not cooperating.

The standard window

In most states, marketplace open enrollment begins November 1 and runs into mid-January, with January 15 the common closing date. The date you enroll matters for when coverage starts: enroll by mid-December, typically December 15, and coverage generally begins January 1; enroll after that and it usually starts February 1. A handful of states run their own marketplaces with slightly different dates, so check your state's exact calendar rather than assuming.

Employer plans run on their own clocks

If you get insurance through work, your open enrollment is whenever your employer says it is, often a few weeks in the fall for a January 1 start, but plenty of companies use mid-year dates. Watch for the announcement from HR, because employer windows tend to be short and unforgiving.

Medicare is a different season entirely

Medicare's annual enrollment period runs October 15 through December 7. It gets advertised heavily during marketplace season, which confuses everyone. If you are under 65 and not on Medicare, those commercials are not about your deadline.

Missed the window? You still have doors

Qualifying life events, losing job coverage, moving states, marriage, a new baby, turning 26, open a personal 60-day special enrollment period on the marketplace. Medicaid and CHIP enroll year-round for those who qualify. And private, medically underwritten plans have no enrollment season at all; healthy applicants can apply in any month and often find strong PPO coverage at competitive prices. The trade-off is underwriting itself, since private plans can decline applicants, which marketplace plans never can.

Why this season deserves your attention

Even if you already have a plan, auto-renewing without looking is how premiums creep. Carriers reprice every year, and with 2026 marketplace premiums up sharply after the enhanced subsidies expired, this is the year to actually compare.

A practical tip: do not wait for deadline week. The final days of open enrollment are the busiest for every carrier, website, and call center, and a paperwork hiccup with no time left to fix it can cost you a start date. Shopping in the first half of the window gives you a calm comparison and a January 1 start, which keeps your deductible aligned with the calendar year.
